Our hydrophobic coating consists of a self-assembling mono-layer that is applied to surfaces and cannot be seen with the naked eye. The individual carbon chains form the surface structure. The resulting observable water-repelling effect is known as beading.
As the contact angle created with many
coatings exceeds 150º, the solid surface is
classified as superhydrophobic, indicating that the liquid has minimized its contact with the surface forming a more compact liquid droplet.
Extremely difficult to produce, oleophobic
coatings are considered the “Holy Grail” of
surface technology. Given that oil has a much lower surface tension than water, it spreads very easily. Water rolls off duck feathers, but oil sticks to them. Having adapted the nanotechnology of hydrophobic coatings, this oleophobic technology works by counteracting the low surface tension of oil.
